Novel Bottom-up and Top-down Strategies for Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine

The scaffold material has become a central and essential component within tissue engineering and regenerative medicine therapies. This leading role has been primarily a result of the capacity to fabricate materials with unprecedented precision that communicate with biology at cellular and sub-cellular levels. Top-down and bottom-up biomaterial fabrication strategies have both advantages and disadvantages. Whilst on one hand top-down techniques continue to improve in their level of precision, reproducibility and high-throughput capabilities, they are still burdened with issues such as low biocompatibility, limited three-dimensionality, and the need for expensive equipment. On the other hand, bottom-up approaches are constantly generating novel self-assembling building-blocks, assembling pathways, and functionalities but still lack the capacity to achieve high quantities of materials, micro/macroscale order, and materials with complex hierarchies. This talk will first present recent work that takes advantage of either top-down (i.e. micro/nanofabrication) or bottom-up (i.e. molecular self-assembly) fabrication to create bioactive and biomimetic scaffolds for bone regeneration applications. Then, I will describe ongoing work that aims to integrate these traditionally incompatible, yet in many ways complimentary, strategies to create scaffolds with improved complexity that exhibit precise physical and biochemical signals designed to control and guide cell behaviour.
Alvaro Mata was born in San José, Costa Rica in 1974 and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Kansas, USA, a Master’s Degree from the University of Strathclyde, UK, and a Doctor of Engineering Degree from Cleveland State University, USA. During his doctorate he worked in the BioMEMS Laboratory at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA, under the direction of Prof. Shuvo Roy developing three dimensional tissue engineering scaffolds with precise architectures and surface topographies designed to guide stem cell growth. From 2005-2008 he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. Samuel I. Stupp at Northwestern University in Chicago, USA, developing self-assembling materials to control stem cell differentiation and bone regeneration. Since 2008, he works as Head of the Nanotechnology Platform at Parc Científic Barcelona in Spain. He received the 2005 Clodomiro Picado Twight Technology Award, the 2006 Baxter Early Career Award in Bioengineering, and a Ramón y Cajal Award from the Government of Spain in 2009. His research focuses on developing novel materials and fabrication processes that integrate top-down and bottom-up strategies for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
